In spite of enjoying a booming market during the 1950s and also in the 1960s, film industry of Singapore saw its downfall in 1965 after it got its independence as the government became more focused on developing the economic condition of the country. Opened in the year 1939 as the Cathay Building, it was closed for renovation in 2000. The Cathay was reopened as it is now on the month of March in 2006, this new building being inclusive of many aspects of the former Cathay Building such as its frontage that has been declared a national monument. Formed jointly by Australia’s Village Roadshow and Hong Kong’s Golden Harvest, the Golden Village in Singapore is an operator of 9 cineplexes and multiplexes in Hong Kong. The Golden Village also owns the biggest Cineplex at a famous shopping mall in Singapore and is about to open a movie theatre at the Great World City.

The Shaw Organization is one of the leading cinema chain and the film distribution companies in Singapore. Established in 1924 by Run Run Shaw and Runme Shaw, the Shaw Organization at present operates 39 screens across seven positions in Singapore, these locations being Balestier, Choa Chu Kang, Century Square, Jurong East, Orchard, Beach Road and Bugis. The Shaw Organization reached the epitome of its success when it was made the owner of several movie theaters along with many amusement parks all over Singapore, Borneo and Malaysia. Currently playing 30 Days Of Night, Bee Movie, Beowulf, Enchanted, Fred Claus, Full Of It, Hitman, Hero, Lust, Caution, Mad Detective, The Kingdom, Om Shanti Om, Pollaphavan and Stardust. The Shaw Organization also presently is also offering various lucrative job opportunities for the deserving candidates.
